Second-Year Apprentice Spotlight – Finn & Sam

At UK Electrical Installations (UKE), our apprenticeship programme continues to grow talented individuals into skilled electricians ready to take on any challenge. As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2025, today we’re shining a light on two of our second-year apprentices, Finn and Sam, who are making remarkable progress in their training.

Building Confidence and Expanding Skills

Both Finn and Sam have seen their roles evolve significantly since their first year, gaining the ability to work independently on key tasks.

“Since my first year, I have picked up a large variety of skills, and I can now work independently on tasks.”

— Sam

“I have worked with a wider variety of apprentices and foremen, and through this I have picked up a lot of skills that I can integrate into my own work.”

— Finn

New Skills in Action

For Finn, mastering technical tasks like glanding armoured cables has been a key highlight of his second year:

“I could do this at first with some support, but now I am able to confidently do this on my own.”

— Finn

Sam, on the other hand, has become proficient in wiring and interpreting circuit drawings:

“I am now able to read drawings confidently and wire by myself.”

— Sam

Support from Mentors

Both apprentices credit the strong support of their mentors for helping them develop their skills and confidence.

“Since working with James Pearson, I have been able to learn new skills and carry these out on my own without problems.”

— Finn

“I’ve been lucky to work with a variety of foremen, starting with Simon and Vern in my first year, and now James in my second. They’ve been essential in my development, and I owe them all a big thank you.”

— Sam

Achievements to Be Proud Of

Both apprentices have taken on tasks that demonstrate their growth and independence. Finn has been trusted to work independently on a project away from home:

“This year, I’ve been working on a project in Newport Pagnell, where I was able to take on my own tasks within a smaller team.”

— Finn

Meanwhile, Sam played a key role in a project by completing the first fix of the ground floor ahead of a key deadline:

“I’m quite proud of my contribution to getting this phase of the project past the deadline.”

— Sam

Looking Ahead

Finn and Sam have clear goals for the months ahead. Finn is keen to broaden his skill set by tackling less familiar tasks:

“I would really like to focus on tasks I am not particularly familiar with and become confident in them, to better my skill set all around.”

— Finn

Similarly, Sam plans to deepen his knowledge in specific areas like warehouse installations:

“I would like to draw my focus onto different aspects of the job that I’m less confident with, like warehouse installation works, and further develop my skills.”

— Sam

Investing in Their Future

We’re incredibly proud of the progress Finn and Sam have made, and their dedication is a testament to the success of our apprenticeship programme. As they continue to grow, we’re excited to see what they’ll achieve next.
